Monarch, the longest established airline brand still trading and flying under the same name in the UK celebrated its 40th anniversary earlier this year on the 5th April. From humble beginnings in 1968 with just two Bristol Britannia 312 aircraft supported by 64 airline staff and 30 engineering staff, to the Monarch Airlines that you see today – 31 jet aircraft, carrying over 7 million passengers a year and operating to over 100 destinations worldwide - it has certainly been an eventful 4 decades!
On Friday 5 April 1968, Monarch's first commercial flight took to the skies from Luton, with 132 passengers onboard, bound for Madrid. Forty years on and low fares airline Monarch now offers flights from Manchester to Alicante, Almeria, Barcelona, Faro, Gibraltar, Ibiza, Lanzarote, Larnaca (Cyprus), Malaga, Menorca, Murcia, Palma & Tenerife.
Monarch also operates scheduled flights to Spain, Gibraltar, Portugal and Cyprus from Birmingham, London Gatwick and London Luton airports. In addition to year-round low fares, Monarch also offers a unique range of tasty hot and cold meals onboard with prices from £3.00. Seats can be pre-booked at £6 per one-way flight to avoid the last minute free-for-all experienced on some other airlines, or from only £15, extra-legroom seats are available, which offer up to six inches of extra space. Regular travellers are rewarded too, with a range of benefits through the airline’s loyalty scheme, Vantage Club.
Passengers travelling on scheduled flights can also avoid the queues at the airport and take advantage of online check-in which is available between seven days and 4.5 hours prior to departure.
